Some good lesson ideas at Christmas time can be as follows; - Christmas Carols Karaoke – if you are in an Asian country you can easily take this activity to the karaoke room– if you are not too shy. Most karaoke rooms and bars will have at least a couple of Christmas songs, and the rest of the time you can fill up with other popular songs, drinks and laughs. It is quite common that a western teacher in Asia will need a couple of “beverages” before they get the courage to sing at karaoke in Asia with their students. - Christmas cards – email. There are many free sites where you can use a Christmas card in English to practice your email. Letter to Santa Claus: Students can write a letter to Santa – and classmates reply to them. - Mystery Santa Claus – CLLC students do this each year and it is fun. Students each draw a name of someone in their class and they are responsible for buying a gift (probably set a 5 or 10 dollar limit). The card will say a hint of who they are and on the gift giving day each student will try to find out who their Santa Claus is. - Trimming the Class Tree – 2 options, you can erect a tree, or you can make one of construction paper and paste it in the wall and have the class decorate it with their own creative ideas. Some points you may want to make are the significance of an angel or star on top. You can also have them make decorations, paper mache and other ideas to decorate the whole room, and school (get the principal’s permission first though). - Christmas play – Canadian Elementary school style. This is a fun activity where students will have a chance to learn lines, use English, and have fun. Some ideas are the Grinch who stole Christmas, the first Christmas, scrooge’s story (most people know these stories and part of the activity can be making up their roles and lines. Costumes, props, etc. this will be a blast. Make sure you remember to take photos also. Students can each take a role, design all of the costumes needed and they can perform the play in front of the other classes. - Christmas internet scavenger hunt : what are the reindeer names? Where does Santa live? What is the name of the famous snowman? Miracle on what street? Who wrote the original novel – A Christmas Carol? Name 5 Christmas carols, how many wisemen? What did the wisemen bring? You can make more problems like these and have them individually or in teams find the answers competing against each other. This can also be adopted to be an oral assignment where students would have to answer the question out loud, something similar to Jeopardy. |
