Christmas ESL Lesson Ideas for Teachers
The goal of this site is to present some useful and fun ESL activities that will help ESL Teachers to teach about western culture surrounding Christmas. In many parts of the world Christmas is not celebrated as it is in Canada. Korea for example; Christmas is more of a “couple” and friends event while new years is more of a family event – quite the opposite of Canada of course.
This is not a problem, as all cultures are different, we are all accepting and international students are generally quite interested to learn about the big western holidays as they have seen on TV and in movies. Many of the international students at CLLC ( Canadian Language Learning College in Halifax) live with homestay families. This is a great opportunity to be able to experience first hand a new culture especially in the wonderful holiday season. Just the same as western ESL teachers have a chance to experience the holiday culture in the country they teach English in such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc.
Chinese new year in a Chinese country is quite an experience. Just the same international students truly appreciate their western English teachers helping them to get a feel of what Christmas and other holidays mean to them.
